Apple's Rs 3 lakh iPhone Duo, OpenAI's 99.9 vs 62.7 AGI problem, and the e-rupee's shrinking circulation
Markets fell everywhere last week on oil: fighting near the Strait of Hormuz pushed crude above $100, gold -1.8%, Bitcoin -1.5%, S&P 500 -0.8%, Nifty -2.1% for a fifth straight losing week with the rupee's worst week since May; traders now expect the Fed to hike next week. Story one: Apple launched the foldable iPhone Duo on 9 September (Rs 2,99,900-4,49,900 in India), its first launch under new CEO John Ternus, and gained about $164B in market value the next day - thirteen times the ~$12B revenue implied by Counterpoint's ~6M unit estimate at $1,999. The untold part: suppliers didn't celebrate. Apple reportedly asked suppliers for prices 30% below existing levels, but had to give Samsung Display an exclusive on the folding screen for up to three years, and memory comes only from Samsung, SK hynix and Micron - memory alone added nearly $300 to the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max bill of materials. Story two: Greg Brockman declared 'Welcome to the AGI era' at GPT-6 Astra's 3 September launch, but ARC Prize scored Astra 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 inside OpenAI's own harness versus 62.7% on a neutral harness (the $19,000 run beat the $26,000 one), and OpenAI's scorecard omits the 62.7. The only contractual AGI definition ever written - Microsoft's $100B-profit trigger - was deleted on 27 April 2026, four months before the announcement. Anthropic's May round lists Samsung, SK hynix and Micron as strategic partners: the memory trio sells chips to Apple and the labs while buying stakes in customers. Story three: on 7 September REC Limited completed India's first tokenised corporate bond in the RBI sandbox - Rs 500 crore at 7.30% for 21 months, oversubscribed at Rs 796 crore of bids, settled same-day in digital rupees - and FM Sitharaman asked the RBI to push the e-rupee harder at the Global Fintech Fest. Awkward number: e-rupee in circulation shrank 24% last year; UPI does more transactions in one day (791M in August) than the e-rupee has done in its entire existence (175M). The defense: the e-rupee was never trying to be UPI - it settles asset and cash atomically on one ledger, which is what the REC bond needed; the use case is institutional.
Why it mattersThree 'claim arrived before the scale' stories in one read, and the through-line is investable: Samsung, SK hynix and Micron sit on the winning side of all three - Apple's supply chain, the AI labs' capex, and the AGI marketing war. The Astra harness gap (99.9 vs 62.7) is also the right BS detector for the next AGI headline.
